Data Disaggregation
Schools should utilize the data available to them through previous years of SOL data, student performance in classes, and any data available from county, state, or national testing programs to make informed decisions for the school involving instructional, physical, and Socio-Emotional Learning based needs. Schools should make decisions based on the following data indicators
Accreditation rates (via VDOE School Quality Profile)
DESSA
Student Behavior (absenteeism, discipline)
Graduation Rates
Student Growth Data from NWEA MAP test
As schools continue to receive updated information from various assessments, data needs to be aligned with goals to see if the school is on target or if adjustments / supports are needed.
Instructional Best Practices
It is vital that instructional programs in schools utilize provide valuable insight into student outcomes compared to school-year goals as outlined in the School Improvement Plan. The program should also be aligned with the curriculum and pacing guides as set forth by the Virginia Department Of Education and the county content specialist. A goal should not fit an instructional program, but rather the instructional program should fit the goal. The following are examples of best practices related to instructional programs
Marzano: 13 Teaching Best Practices (Cornelius, 2015)
Training Metrics to Improve Student Outcomes (Khouri, 2022)
Instructional Supervision
In the spring of 2022, I was able to work with a new to the profession teacher on an area that they felt needed improvement. Our focus was on classroom management and working with students both individually and as a group to follow the norms and procedures of the classroom to better their success in the course.
Educational Technology
As a former Intrustctional Technology Integrator and current eLearning Integrator, I believe that technology is vital for the success of crafting future citizens in our students. They have grown up in a world where a cell phone is always in your pocket, and as they have aged the abilities of devices has improved greatly. We should look to tap into this resource along with a multitude of digital platforms that work to enhance the learning opportunities for students while meeting them at their current level to achieve growth in a particular subject area.
Below are several technology-based online resources that an educator can use with students as means of instruction, practice, or differentiated lesson planning.
